A small island is formed by the flowing river Tunga, and the dense of trees on the island provide shelter for immigrating birds. This small piece of land at Mandagadde village started to attract hundreds of birds, especially migratory and water birds. The island seems to have the ideal conditions that these birds look for while nesting or roosting. This picnic spot houses some of the spectacular migratory birds. The birds like Median Egret, Little Cormonant, darter or snake-bird etc., comes from different parts of the world during May for breeding. The breeding cycle will be completed by October and the migrated birds return home with their young ones. A watchtower has been erected for viewing different species of birds. Boating arrangements are also been made by the state forest department for closer viewing of the nesting birds. In the peak season, between July and September, you can see as many as 5,000 birds. Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is unique and located in the midst of dense forest at a distance of 15 km on the Banavasi Road in Gudavi in Sorab taluk of Shimoga district. A paradise for bird watchers, Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is spread across an area of nearly 0.75 sq km. The sanctuary is located in the town of Sorab in the proximity of Shimoga on the banks of Gudvi Lake. Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is an ideal picnic spot to spend weekends or vacations for bird watcher's in the most fruitful manner. Some important birds that are found at Gudavi include White Pebis, Stone Bill, Egret, Cormorant, Snake bird, Heron etc. A platform is built here for a closer look of birds.
